Starting a new website? What are the things you would do to increase site traffic? The most important function for me is my keyword research. I need to formulate a good SEO plan that goes along with my research.

This is what most people do; they just put up web pages without having any kind of system set up. 3 things go into keyword research: how much search volume a word gets, who you are targeting and taking a look at the competition. When you put up a website without a given plan, 6 months will go by and you’ll wonder why you don’t have any traffic. The bottom line is you shouldn’t put together a website without a plan. Sure the plan takes some time, but it’s time that is well worth it. Two things can be left out of keyword research. They are picking words without a target or picking a keyword that has so much competition that it will be hard to rank for.

I’ll take more time developing the keywords than I do with any other task. Scrutinize the reason as to why someone is searching for that term. I’ll do all of this before I write one bit of content, for if I do it this way, I’ll be more successful. This is how you measure your success. Now examine the search phrases used and how many times they are searched. This will give you a good idea of how much work you have to put in to rank well for each term. Now you know how much traffic to look forward to and how long it will take to reach your goal.

I do the same thing with each website I start up. Experts seem to get this area of keyword research wrong. When people go to an expert to learn about SEO, good keyword research just makes a lot of sense. I don’t understand why some leave this important function out.

Websites are pretty straightforward and you’ll have either an ecommerce website or one that has a sales letter. The ecommerce website would be easier to come up with keywords for in my opinion. I’d go after the longer tailed keywords for the ecommerce web site. With a good plan, you’ll rank in no time flat, probably a lot faster than the sales page.

Other pages are not really that long. Sales letters comes to mind when I think of this. In order to rank high in the search engines for your sales page, you need to get into the minds of the people that will be purchasing your product. Social media websites are a good source of traffic to sales letters.

Last, come up with a good list of keywords that will work best for your site. After this is done, you’re well on your way to increase site traffic for your brand new web site.
